Mazda – COTR – Newsletter 2016 #8 – Cleaned and prepped by Muc Off. Race #4: Getting ready for Bear X-Ing.

COTR Segments

· I think I have fixed the formatting issue for the newsletter that have made the images “disappear”. You should be able to see the banners at the bottom and any other photos in the newsletters this week. If you can’t……I will go back to the keyboard and mouse and figure it out (or it might be your settings)

· Where was the MECX team at Tugboat? Only 2 racers getting points??

· Check out the re-formatted page for the Team standings that Roland has been working on.

http://www.crossontherock.com//php/team-standings/?series=2016

Also
· Besides the Bear X-ing and the Royal Victoria Running Festival this weekend there is another event going on Saturday south-west of here on the island of KONA. One of our own COTR racers, Peter Reid, was just inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame this week down in Hawaii (that is why he missed Tugboat and will miss Bear). Check out this article written a bit about Peter here: http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/news/articles/2016/10/peter-reid-ironman-hall-of-fame.aspx#axzz4MMoqY0Go

Huge Congratulations Peter!
· Good luck to sometimes COTR racer Jason Sandquist racing the BIG show in KONA.

REGISTRATION
It is getting close to being MANDATORY but for now it is still (almost) mandatory. Registration CLOSES at 8:00 pm on Sunday Night. Before you e-mail me at 8:01pm, 9:05pm etc about re-opening it or us registering you…..the answer is “no”. We have other things to do!!

Registration link: https://raceroster.com/events/2016/10088/2016-cross-on-the-rock-the-bear-xing
Note: Masters and Intermediate MAY fill up…..so don’t wait. (note: last year’s Intermediate at Bear X-Ing is over our 80 limit now)

LOCATION
One of the most important things you need to know about this coming Monday’s race is…it is in the SAME spot as the last 2 years. If you were not there for the last 2 years just drive to the top of Bear Mountain and look for signs.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Making use of the entirety of the ever changing Bear Mountain Golf Driving Range, plus some new “off range” sections and off-bike features, the race course will be like last year’s super-fast rolling and flowy endeavour but changed up from the previous 2 editions to make use of the undulating and perfectly groomed golf course terrain in new and exciting ways. There will still be lots of bermed corners, off camber sections and high speed momentum sectors, but there will also be some more challenging sections as well to mix things up from previous years.

IMPORTANT – PARKING
Just like last year traffic control signage will be directing all cyclocross participants and fans to the corporate parking lot holding up to 280 cars.

From the parking lot, signage will guide participants to the race venue area 600m away.

TEAM TENT AREA – make sure to RSVP
Once again there will be a designated TENT ALLEY course section (with barriers!) for this year’s Bear Crossing. If you want to reserve a team tent spot fire Drew a note (drew.mackenzie@triathloncanada.com).

Keep in mind that Bear Mtn has very limited parking down at the driving range and so team’s wanting to be part of TENT ALLEY will have to drive down the gravel road, drop off their tent and then drive their vehicle back up to the main parking lot.

BIKE WASH
Water and bike cleaning area will be available at the back of The HUB located en-route between the main parking lots and the race course. (IF there is a hose bib that we can locate at the driving range we will also set up the power washer for pre and during events. Post event washes are expected to be done at “The HUB”)

EVENT SPONSORS:
Shimano (http://bike.shimano.com/)
Pearl Izumi (http://www.pearlizumi.com/)
Pro Components (http://www.pro-bikegear.com/en-gb)

FOOD and BEVERAGE:
The best waffles in the business, Wannawafel will be on site.

We will also have a beer cart next to TENT ALLEY. Cash / Debit / Credit all accepted as payment for beer.

AWARDS and APRES RACE:
Following the Expert races, Awards will take place on the Masters Lounge Patio at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort. The Masters Lounge will be serving a pared down menu of pub fare (wings, soup, salad, pizza, burgers, and sandwiches) and will have a beer special – Lighthouse Lager for $5/pint. Lots of food options and one of the best views of any awards venue out there.

The weather is looking 50/50 at the moment, so if it’s wet and rainy we will provide some extra coverage on the Patio to keep everyone dry

2. COTR 2016 Hats. Limited Quanity

Short note on this one. We have had some COTR 2016 Hats made up by Sew What I Sew in Cumberland. They are sweet. 4 styles and so far the first 4 people that have them (Race directors) all picked different ones. So the score is 1 all. . We will have them at Bear X-ing for $28. First come.

Mazda – COTR – Newsletter 2016 #7 – Cleaned and prepped by Muc Off. Race #3: Tugboat Cross close out.

COTR Segments

* Nice to see Sean Lunny (Rock City Cycles) return to COTR after an 8 year absence. Sean made it from the back row of Masters all the way up to 6th place. An amazing ride!
* Nathan Braun continues to do great in the Beginner men’s category with his 2nd win in 2 start this year.
* Isla Walker in Beginner women’s category went 3 for 3 for 2016 at Transfer Beach
* Carter Woods (Dodge City Cycles) won his second intermediate race out of two this year as did Brian Green in Masters Men.
* Emily Boyle took her first Victory in 6 races and gained valuable team points for Victoria Wheelers.
* Bill McMillan took his 9th win in a row in Super Master.
* Amazing to see 50 year old Pete Stevenson lining up on the front row of Expert Men.
* Sorry to not see how young Emily Johnston (Trail Bikes) would have done on the hilly technical Tugboat race with her rare absence from a COTR event.

Also

* BIG thanks to Richard Cook for hooking up the equipment trailer and giving it a tow down to Bear Mountain for Race #4
* The Zoom Zoom Half Track and ‘Lil Nutcase Kids racers had books as prizes this weekend curtesy of the re-purposed hill climb primes from Mt. Washington. Thanks Morgan Harker and Drew MacKenzie

A week today is Bear X-ing. Our Thanksgiving Monday event is typically the BIGGEST and most festive cross race of the season. We can’t wait to host it and Drew MacKenzie has designed a brand new course due to the on-going construction at Bear Mountain. It should be great. More details will follow on Thursday night heading into the long weekend. Register here: https://raceroster.com/events/2016/10088/2016-cross-on-the-rock-the-bear-xing

Before we proceed into the main body of the newsletter we just need to re-address something that comes up every year. Helmets.

Yesterday we had a few incidents where this was “less than ideal”. Here are two;

The first one was before races started with a dad riding the course with his son. Son had helmet on. Father did not. Certainly not a great example and certainly not safe.

The second one a rider racing in the elite category was riding UP and DOWN the road leading to the park warming up with his headphones on, and no helmet. A car was driving towards the park stopped at the “race in progress” sign and decided to turn left into the gravel parking lot by the “amphitheater stairs”. The rider who was doing sprints up and down the road approached the stopped vehicle at decent pace, snaked around the car on its left, which now is turning, nearly avoiding collision, and then threw hand gestures in the air towards the driver.

In this case we have more than one problem: Helmet. Headphones, bad pr and really bad behavior. All not great for COTR. This rider knows who they are.

A few points:

* COTR is NOT a UCI world championships race….the riders here are not “pros”. So no need to try to be super cool.
* COTR usually do not have a closed venue, we almost always share the parks/roads we race on with other users/drivers
* Riders should always wear helmets especially riding on public roads, since, it’s the law
* Youths always look up to adults, parents or “elite” riders, if you are one or both or all three don’t set bad examples

IF this turns out is not enough of a reminder then we will have to increase the penalty.

1. Tugboat we loved you.

From Race directors, racers and awesome organizers Tara and Mike Pollock Thanks to: Jim Allair Chris Birch Trevor Jones Pete Stevenson Glenn Popenko Rich Huggins Caitlin Dave Pady Aaron Clare MacKinnon Helen Gibbins Kathy Theobold Tiffany Wong Jen and Chris Day Sue Glenn Kari Pollock Natalie Jones Sydney O’Toole Tom Rozendaal

Thanks to event sponsors: Active Solutions and Health Coal City Cycles Old Town Bakery the Town of Ladysmith Mexican Food Mafia Wolf Brewing.

Interesting points: Rich Huggins who helped with the kids races, said that his 3 year old daughter, who raced for the first time, wore her number for the rest of the day and kept running around the house, pretending that she was racing her friends! Such a great introduction for kids!!

Observations and notes:
* The course this year was easy on the eyes (as always) but not on the body!
* The “trifecta of pain”, (sand, stairs and the steep hill), took its toll!!
* The Town of Ladysmith Parks and Rec was great to work with as always.
* A special thanks to the Mexican Food Mafia for coming at the last minute.
* We had a record set up time and a smooth event thanks to the great team of volunteers!

Signing off, Tara and Mike

Notes from Norm
* One of the most challenging courses that I have raced on Vancouver Island. So many technical features that the laps went by so fast. LOTS of line choices.
* LOTS of kids in the Half Track with around 40 and the little kids race at around 20!
* Great tacos
* Amazing weather
* Incredible venue
* A lot of sore back complaints today! I read a couple on FB. A few people mentioned it to me in e-mails. My back got progressively more sore as the day went on so much so that my co-workers got sick of me complaining about it.
* Pro-Tip. Dry Lube (thanks Greg MacDonald)
* Mike and Tara are amazing organizers. There is VERY little extra that I have to do at this event outside of my “normal” work. They treat their crew great and they explain everything well. We are lucky to have them!
* Great prizes from the event sponsors as well as from Series Sponsors: Muc Off, Phillips, The Howard Johnston and Blue Toque for this event.

2. Interview with Tugboat Cross Expert Winners; Carey Mark and Drew MacKenzie

Carey Mark (Steed Cycles) http://www.crossontherock.com//php/racer/?racername=Carey+Mark

Congratulations on your 12th win at Tugboat CX yesterday and your 24th podium placing.

Carey: Thanks so much Norm! Really appreciate the opportunity. Great race today.

1. You have won 6 of the last 8 expert races. What’s it going to take to beat you?

Excellent question, and one I’m so glad I don’t have to answer. I’m just so happy to be doing well, I love the positive atmosphere, the great venues and the amazing people that consistently come back. Why throw a cloud over the sun burst?

2. Typically you are a slow starter and a FAST finisher. Is that your plan or just how things work out?

I used to think that passing people would give me motivation to continue working harder, but with many words of wisdom, and some amazing opportunities to race with some of the best in Canada, I know the start is where many races are won. I still think of myself as more of an endurance athlete. A diesel. Strong and consistent, but honestly in the past year that has probably changed, and I just haven’t thought about it much.

3. How did you approach the Tugboat course?

Ha! My extensive preface ritual includes; Saturday rides with friends (2-4 hrs), a late night with a few non hydrating beverages, 7 am kids hockey practice, followed by a frantic attempt to pack, load and get the kids to the event for the zoom zoom half track. Today, when we did arrive, I realized it was a different course than previous years, which lends for more excitement! Multiple dismounts, stairs and hills, things I have been practicing in the Thursday night clinics. Perfect!

4. At Mt. Washington this year there was a 33 year age spread between the podium placers. How is that even possible?

Emily is a phenom. She inspires every woman there to want to reach their potential. As for me, I feel I have a lot to learn about cycling in general. But I have been fortunate to compete with many talented racers, who make me to be better. I do my best to step up for the challenge, and dig into that hurt locker when needed.

5. Have you been working on your starts?

Yeah I’ve had to face the reality that although I’d rather use the 1st lap as a warm-up, starts are critical. My strategy has been to find a fast steady wheel and use it as a carrot to put into a better 2nd lap position. That said I don’t see to many 1st lap primes in my future. Which is a shame because I really enjoy Phillips beer.

Drew MacKenzie (Shimano/ Marin/Pearl Izumi) http://www.crossontherock.com//php/racer/?racername=Drew+MacKenzie

Congratulations Drew on your 10th win and your 30th COTR podium yesterday at Tugboat CX!

Thanks! Sorry for missing the awards podium. Clearly I still need some practice when it comes to this podium thing.

1.Tugboat was your first win since 2014 Binab Property Group GP. Did you ever think you were going to get back on the top step at COTR?

I had some close ones last year, so I figured one might go my way again at some point.

2.How did you approach Tugboat differently?

I honestly did not do much differently. I think I’m just getting fitter now after racing into shape through September. We’ve also been having some great practices on Wednesday nights in Vic for the last month. Apparently trying really really hard to keep up with the likes of Kelly, Parker, Raph, Felix, Terry and the Robs (Parkin and Britton) is a pretty good workout.

3.Tugboat was a “very” tough course with LOTS of dismounts……you typically don’t like dismounts. How did you overcome your dismount dislike yesterday?

I usually never run, so longer stair sections are not my friend, but with the 2 le mans starts we’ve had this year, that’s two more runs than I normally do in a year, so I am in the best running shape of my life and was just bouncing up those suckers.

4.What was the key to your victory (besides just going faster than everyone else in Expert)?

Basically I got onto the beach section first and was able to ride it cleanly. I didn’t see exactly what happened but from what I heard it was a bit chaotic for the rest of the field the first time through the beach section, so I got a pretty good gap off of that and then went hard for the next 2 laps to see if I could grow the gap and stay away. After that I just suffered as much as I could and tried to stay as smooth as possible through all the various sand sections and technical bits. I had a couple spots on the course that I could look back and check if the gap was staying the same and so I could adjust the effort accordingly, generally fluctuating between DEFCON puke and cellular hypoxia.

5.You are currently 2nd of ALL time COTR podiums. You also hold the dubious honour of having the most DNF’s. What are you doing this year to keep your DNF count down?

I’ve just been taking the “Did Not” out of DNF. Actually, I just had a look at the stats right now. First, I think it is so cool how good the stats are for the COTR series. Second, some of those races I actually did finish so I want a recount

3. COTR 2016 Hats.

Limited Quanity Short note on this one. We have had some COTR 2016 Hats made up by Sew What I Sew in Cumberland. They are sweet. 4 styles and so far the first 4 people that have them (Race directors) all picked different ones. So the score is 1 all. I will post a photo after I dig them out of the van. Mazda – COTR – Newsletter 2016 #6 – Cleaned and prepped by Muc Off. Race #3:
Tugboat Cross. Transfer Beach. Ladysmith.

We could use a bit of help with a few things:
* We want to do a Trophy Race for the ‘Lil Nutcase racers. This is a “tradition” from BMX where EVERYONE gets a trophy. I found 1 box of my old BMX trophies that will be a good start but if anyone has any more that they want to donate that are gathering dust we will try to give them a new and proud home.
* The trailer could use a tow down to Victoria after Tugboat Cross. It requires a 2″ receiver and either 4 or 7 pin plug. Fire me a note if you can help out. Drew and crew for Bear X-ing would really appreciate the help.

And more Bullet Points:
* Last chance for any team changes or tweaks to names (I have a few more to take care of that people have e-mailed me about).
* If you could not see the photos of Andreas’s knee in Newsletter #5 your e-mail browser is probably not set to “Rich Text” and you won’t see the sweet shot of Tara Pollock in this e-mail either.
* On-Line registration……just a note. YOU can change most things on there when you mess them up. Gender. Category. Age…etc. PLEASE don’t send them to me. IF I had to fix ALL the things that 350+ racers PLUS myself mess up……it would take up a LOT of time….and I just don’t have that kind of time. IF you get REALLY stuck after REALLY trying. THEN let me know.
* Remember the adjusted registration protocol that we used at Mt Washington will be used again at Tugboat. Beginners. And then Next category in one line and everyone else in another.

1. Tugboat Cross Preview

It is getting close to being MANDATORY but for now it is still (almost) mandatory. Registration link here: Registration link: https://raceroster.com/events/2016/10086/2016-cross-on-the-rock-tugboat-cross Note: Masters and Intermediate MAY fill up…..so don’t wait.

BIG NOTE: Parking is SUPER LIMTED. PLEASE CARPOOL (or just ride your bikethere).

Interview with race directors Mike and Tara.

1. Tugboat Cross was voted “loved it” by more racers than any other COTR in 2015. What makes it so special?

It has got a lot to do with the actual venue. We don’t put any more leg work into the preparation than other races in the series, it’s the venue that makes it so special. It is tough to beat the ocean view and actually riding on the beach, the fast rolling grassy areas, the mature forested area and the over-all easy access location. Transfer Beach is a destination for good reason, and we are forever grateful that the town of Ladysmith allows us to show it off.

2. What features have you changed for this year’s race?

The amphitheater stairs are back (by request by someone who is kind of a big deal), less pavement (almost none other than a road crossing), and a beach volleyball court fly by. Haven’t accurately measured it out yet, but plan for a 2.4km – 2.7km course which is similar to other years. Great section for the kids too race on as well.

3. Will there be any food on site this year?

The best waffles in the business, Wannawafel will be on site.

4. Where is the best place to buy a cinnamon bun on Vancouver Island?

The best cinnamon buns around are at the Old Town Bakery. They can be won…but if you don’t ride fast enough to win, you can still hit the Old Town Bakery on the main drag and buy some and tell all your friends that you won them.

5. Besides Tara and Mike who else is key to making this event happen?

COTR, The Town of Ladysmith, Parks and Recreation, Coal City Cycles, Active Solutions, the Old Town Bakery, the Wolf Brewing Co, but mostly the amazing individuals who come out for the flagging on Saturday night and then spend their Sunday volunteering and/or racing. Friends and family from Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Duncan are responsible for dialling in the race course.

6. Will Tara be making her return to cross soon?

That’s a secret. When it happens, it’s going to be big.

Tara on “the stairs” at Beban Park. Not sure what year….maybe 2005? On Wendy’s Pink Surly…..also not sure why she was riding that bike?

2. Don’t sabotage your lap splits.

Mazda – COTR – Newsletter 2016 #5 – Cleaned and prepped by Muc Off. Race #2: Top of the Rock Cross. Mt. Washington. Recap

  • Wednesday night don’t forget to tune into the first world cup of the year down in Vegas. It should be a wicked battle. Check out the preview on www.theholeshot.ca with a link to watch.
  • Major congratulations to COTR race Peter Reid who will miss the next 2 events because he will be in KONA getting inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame for his 3 world championship wins. Sorry you will be missing the next 2 races!
  • Did you know that every time you race this year your name goes in to win a Naked Frameset….. which is one of our series prizes. Each time you enter a race you enter to win!
  • Super cool to see 14 year old Emily Johnston (Trail Bikes) take her first Expert Women’s podium. 33 years separated the expert women’s podium ages. Super cool!
  • We have changed the series points reporting on the web site if you have not checked it out yet.

  7. WAY down below…..some gnarly knee photos of Andreas (do NOT look if you are squeamish) and a knee report.

1. Recap COTR 2016 #2. Top of the Rock Cross. Mt Washington Notes from Race Director Dave Nowak:

It’s been 10 years since I first brought cross to the valley.
(Norm’s note. The first race in the CV was Coal Cross.
http://www.crossontherock.com//php/race-results/?raceid=1 It stands as the LONGEST cross race we have ever put on in time after the leaders absolutely hammered the first lap and messed up the lap count. It also stands as the 6th hardest race of all time with a 12% drop out rate. It was and still is one of my favorite races)
I am completely amazed at how many people attended this race considering the distance travelled and the fact that it was a Saturday! Gone are the days that 70 people at an island cup race was considered a huge success. Super stoked on this new venue and Mount Washington is stoked on the event! They want to build an entire weekend around this race, Saturday night party, DH race or lift accessed enduro on the Sunday. Rumours have it that they are building pump track, would consider an over/under through the courtyard to access more terrain and will work with us to build a ‘smoother’ course!
Fingers crossed…
Huge props to Chris Sykes for designing a course that was fun, fast, with a ridiculous run-up considering the limited terrain we were able to use this year. I can’t remember who said it, but it truly was ‘diabolical’!
So awesome to see Andrew Brown back at a CX race, granted it wasn’t on a bike, and yes Lee Blais, he is not dead. Without him re-flagging the course throughout the day, course doping would have been at an all time high. (Norm’s note. It would be impossible to beat the SSCXWC2015) Huge thanks to Trail Bicycles, Jeff has always been a huge supporter of cross, so rad to see him take out the beginner clinic. I also have to thank all the other race day sponsors; Discover Comox Valley, Biblio Taco, Gladstone Brewery, Milano Coffee, Geurrilla Pizza, Blue Toque, CV Collective, The Riding Fool Hostel, Island Joy Rides, Sew What I Sew and Eatmore Sprouts.
Highlight for me was Morgan Harker and Drew Mac donating their Run-up primes back to the kids races. (Norm’s Note….we have figured out a plan for that cash).
I would not have been able to do it without the huge group of volunteers…
Jen Mac, Katie Strain, Sarah J, Christina Zimmerman and Vanessa at registration. (Norm’s Note. Many people commented on how smooth the registration was at this event. We re-wrote the protocol a bit before the event and had a good briefing and it showed. One of the smoothest so far) Dan Wilson and his CVAA band of merry men who helped Hilary Grant with manual timing.
Pat and Laurel on electronic timing.
The Friday afternoon crew who helped pound posts and flag the course and the Trail bikes crew who raked over 500m of course two weeks ago.
I can’t forget to thank Brett “The Holeshot” Whitehead for all his help both with course setup and from behind his computer.
A big thank you for Jen Mac for wearing her “Nurse Jenny’ hat along with Dave the bike patroller for taking care of Dre Hagen (see the ‘gnar way down below if you dare) after he and his bike decided to have a fight. I heard they’re getting along again.
And I do have to thank Norm for letting me get back in the game.
Thanks to anyone and everyone else who made this race a big success!
More Norm’s Notes.

  • Amazing day. I know it did rain at some point….but I can’t recall it being very long….it just seemed to be great weather the whole day.
  • Super challenging course. We will see how it scores at the end of the season survey. Most people said that they loved the way it raced. The only comment (and it was not “negative” just a comment) was it needed a little more distance. If we get more people out for this event next year (which after hearing how good it was I am sure we will) we will be looking to add a bit more onto this course.
  • Super happy to have the SS prizes back from Phillips Brewery. (and non-beer for U19 from Sew what I sew).
  • Great venue.
  • Amazing back drop.
  • Great to see Sylvia Storry back out racing COTR.

2. Zoom Zoom Video
For you ZOOM ZOOM racers here is a little video from Saturday’s race: https://youtu.be/6Q9Sn0NFEQs
Thanks to Sean Voigt for making the drive up in the Mazda CX3. Getting there early and doing a great job helping out with the kids races.
He also has a bunch of photos which I will fire a link up on the FB page later in the week.

3. Some registration changes coming up
We wanted to give you a heads up that we will be implementing a 80 person cap for each category going forward. There has only been 2 race categories that have hit this limit so far. With Bear X-Ing on Thanksgiving Monday and the series final being in Saanich we anticipate that these caps may be hit again. Don’t be disappointed. Make sure you sign up before the cap has been hit. (At this point it only effects Masters Men and Intermediate Men).

4. Team Update
The New Series Team rankings have been VERY popular to check out.
LOTS of conversation about them over the weekend.
http://www.crossontherock.com//php/team-standings/?series=2016 If there is a problem with your team name. For example you have 2 teams that should be combined to one mega-super team. We will give you until Thursday to let us know. We will fix as many things as we can.
Then from that point forward it will be up to the racers to do their part and make sure you are signed up for the right team when you register.
Again if you missed it on our FB post last week here is the information.
100 points for winning expert…
80 points for winning masters/intermediate
60 points for beginner.
The number of points each person gets it proportional to where they finish.
Finish mid pack, get half those many points. Finish last, get 0.
Finish 5 of 20 gets you same # of points as finishing 10 of 40 etc etc. This doesn’t give benefit to racing in small category or to smaller races.
Top 5 racers per race earn points, no more than 2 per category.
A team needs at least 3 people finishing at each race to be counted.

5. Update on results processing
I will get an official shake down from Patrick, Roland and Katie before the next event but from the e-mails that have been going back and forth that I have been cc’ed on I THINK race #2.5 went a bit better for electronic timing. We will try to link up some splits this week.
For the uninitiated and naïve you might think that this should be “simple” and “easy”. Just attach some computer chips to some riders.
Capture the information. Pump it onto the web site post-race.
Let me tell you it is NOT.
When we tried this for the first time at the Kona Kup in 2013 we used one of the most experienced timers in the industry. He said, “This was the most difficult type of event I have ever tried to time. EVER”. He spent 7 hours post-event making sure the results were correct and had to write a special program to interpret the raw data.
There are lots of things about cross that other events just do not have. Multiple laps. Multiple categories on the course at the same time.
People warming up….and going by the timing equipment during their events.
People that can not or will not follow simple instructions on how to attach a timing chip to their wrist. People that wear their timing chip from a previous race….for the next race. Racers that DNF and then hang out at the finish line with their timing chips on their wrist…..getting counted by the reader……the list goes on. Some events have some of these things.
But no other type of event has ALL of these things.
The Vancouver Cross crew took 2 years to get theirs ALMOST dialed (it will never be 100%). 2 years!
We are at 2.5 races.
It will come….but it takes a bit.
For now though we are lucky to have experienced timers to do manual timing.
And even MORE lucky to have Katie and Roland that have a LOT of patience, knowledge and experience.
So next time you fire off an e-mail wondering why you don’t have your points but you registered the first race as NORMON THIBAULT and the second race as Norm Thibault……be patient. We will sort it out.
For now….we ask the racers to do their best to get their information correct when they register. To read the updates about timing and registration. And to listen to instructions at the races about clearing the finish line, Not reefing their timing chips super tight so they don’t register (Halldor), not carrying their timing chip with them when they DNF and not pre-riding near the timing equipment.
We will get there…..together. And then super-geek out on the stats!

6. Looking ahead to Tugboat Cross
It is nice to have 15 days to build the excitement towards Tugboat Cross.
Last year more racers rated this race “Loved It” than any other course. A full 5% higher than #2.
One of the most picturesque settings on Ladysmith Harbour……and a sweet beach which we will be taking advantage of.
Plus Wannawafel will be on-site!

7. WAY down below…..some gnarly knee photos of Andreas (do NOT look if you are squeamish) and a knee report.
Knee report from Andreas Hagen
Awesome day out this weekend – great course and I had a ton of fun! Given the look on everyone’s suffering faces, I may have come out easier off than most. Tough but great course!
The knee…it’s going to be a week before I do much, so I may be cheering and on hand-up duty only at tugboat. Good news, no new fractures or damage to ligaments!
Attached some pics – first staples ever for me and frankly feeling a bit frankensteinish. Be warned, they’re a bit nasty

Mazda – COTR – Newsletter 2016 #4 – Cleaned and prepped by Muc Off. Race #2:
Top of the Rock Cross. Mt. Washington. Saturday.

Liking the bullet form points at the start of each newsletter so we will keep that theme rolling.

  • The schedule for this event is 30 minutes LATER than the schedule for ALL other COTR events this year. This is to allow for a bit of extra travel time for almost everyone.
  • Don’t forget your license, a copy of it, an e-mail receipt or something. Otherwise bring $10 extra.
  • From our furthest south point of the COTR series (and history) we move to the furthest North and the furthest UP. First trip to Mt Washington
  • The forecast has gone from “EPIC CX CONDITIONS” for this weekend to “We will probably still need mud tires”. Remember though that we are in the mountains and conditions can change quickly so be prepared for anything.
  • Watch out for the return of and revenge of the anti points structure racer in EXPERT – The one and only Rob Parkin
  • Shout out to Jordan Drew who has experienced the 2nd shortest COTR CX season of 2016 (behind Peter Wellsman). Jordon got tangled with someone in a corner in the first lap of the Expert Race and broke his collar bone. Surgery this week. (See related story below about Super-Soccer-Sunday). Get better Jordan.
  • Check your results. IF they are not correct follow the protocol as call up on Saturday is based on 1st race results.
  • Don’t forget about the EVOC Bag which is one of our series prizes. Each time you enter a race you enter to win!

In newsletter #4:

  1. Registration information and changes.
  2. Preview COTR 2016 #2. Mt Washington.
  3. A story about Super-Soccer-Sunday

1. Registration information and changes.

(Almost) Mandatory pre-registration CLOSES at 8:00pm FRIDAY NIGHT.
The link to register is here: https://raceroster.com/events/2016/10085/2016-cross-on-the-rock-top-of-the-rock-cross

We are still tweaking this process for 2016 but here are a few changes and notes.

Pre-registration has become (almost) mandatory at all COTR races this year. We need the extra time to organize call up lists, registration lists and plan a head. We were not getting that time with 35-100 people registering on the day – of – race last year. So we needed to make a change.

You don’t 100% have to register a head of time. You can show up the day of and pay $10 more to race BUT here is the deal. If you are not pre-registered you will get called up last. First will be the people that are ranked in the series. Second will be the people not ranked that pre-registered. Third will be day of race. It does not matter if you are the LEADER of the category. You will go to the back. We hope that is extra incentive to pre-register (besides the $ savings).

Registration for ALL-CATEGORIES ENDS 30 minutes before the start of the race.

Beginners only (again) until their registration closes. Then we will have one line for the NEXT race and one line for everyone else.

2. Preview COTR #2. Top of the Rock Cross. Mt Washington

Things you need to know:

FIRST OF ALL: You will need to fill out a Mt. Washington waiver at registration. EVERYONE will need to do this.

One of the most popular questions to our crew answered right away:
Washrooms/changerooms are located in the main lodge.

We ask that if the weather is inclement the riders and entourage do their best to keep the mud out of the main lodge and the Whisky Jack. We would like to use this venue in the future and have a lift accessible enduro the following day to have a complete ‘bike centric’ weekend.

Cross on the rock is back this weekend with a brand new venue for 2016. Mt Washington Alpine Resort plays host to the second race in the COTR series. Part of the fun of cyclocross is getting the chance to check out new venues and this sounds like it’s going to be a challenging one. From the organizers: “The course has been described as ‘lumpy’ with compacted grass sections, wide open gravel, a mix of pavement and paving stones and we even snuck in a section of singletrack. The crux of the course is the 50 foot run-up. Perhaps with the right gear and tire combination, and if you have pistons for legs you may not have to dismount.” So there you have it. It’s going to be a tough one that will test your entire quiver of cyclocross skills. And the best part? “The mountain is still open so bring your park bike to send it after your race and don’t forget your wallet for post race bevies and burgers at Teds.” COTR is going with a pretty much mandatory pre-reg this year, so don’t delay and get signed up:

Registration
Will be in the central courtyard weather permitting. If it’s wet and rainy, registration will be upstairs in the day lodge in the Whiskey Jack (AKA the cafeteria). Racers can hang out here and stay dry before and after races if it’s wet.

Team Tents
May be placed on the green space around the playground and in the courtyard around the ticket booth. They can also be placed on the paving stones adjacent to the Herb Bradley Centre. Space is first come, first serve.

Parking
We ask that racers use the latter half of parking lot 1. Meaning… the area nearest to the day lodge should be left for tourists and MTBers paying for lift tix. Racers can also park up top in P 2 and P3 adjacent to the Deer and Bear Lodge.

Awards
To follow the Expert race. Again if the weather is good they will be held out in the courtyard. If it’s wet and rainy we will host them in the Whisky Jack upstairs

ALSO
* Dave Nowak will put up $100 of his own personal money to the first person that rides the whole run up in a race. Beginners have the first crack at it.
* There is a bike wash station adjacent to the main lodge.

Reminders:
We also want to remind racers that the both the bike park and the scenic chairlift rides are in full swing and we should be aware when using the facility and warming up on site. We aren’t the only people on the mountain.

DO NOT POACH RUNS IN THE BIKE PARK!!! Ride your Cx bike on the course and warm-up on the parkway, in the parking lots or on the various access roads throughout the village. I say again… DO NOT POACH RUNS IN THE BIKE PARK!!! That being said, bring your big bike and purchase a $20 lift ticket after 4pm that allows you to ride until 5:30.

3. A story about Super-Soccer-Sunday

A long time ago, so the legend goes, in Nanaimo there started a group of competitive, athletic like minded people that thought it would be a GREAT idea to start playing a fun game of Soccer on Sundays. The group grew and grew. People took the soccer “game” WAY too seriously. Insults and injuries followed. And of course it all fell apart because it was no longer fun and people were going to work on Monday beat up.

We don’t want COTR to become like Super Soccer Sunday (SSS for short). Everyone has to go back to work. Everyone has a life. This is supposed to be a FUN event. So don’t be “that guy” or “that girl” that takes it WAY too seriously. The one that causes a crash or an injury. The one that people start to not like to race against because they take it too far. COTR is super awesome. Let’s keep it that way.

Chill out.

Have Fun.

No more broken collar bones from inter racer crashes!

Can’t wait to race at MtWashington. See everyone Saturday!!
