NANAIMO
To give a gentle introduction to cyclo-cross, MIVA (Mid Island Velo Association) is holding its second year of CX clinics where participants can learn and improve their skills at dealing with all kinds of obstacles, dismounting and remounting, cornering, riding cross camber sections, and even what to look for in their pre-riding of CX courses. Each clinic ends with a short race where riders can practise their skills and techniques and have a qualified coach offer constructive advice. Last year, a number of the more experienced competitors found the clinics invaluable in improving their performance.
Some participants use mountain bikes for the clinics and even for the Cross on the Rock races but, if you have a cyclo-cross bike or a road bike that can be modified, most of the courses favour these. One of the clinics will have a section dealing with bike modification.
Clinics are held at Beban Park and dates and times can be found on the Cross on the Rock web site and also on MIVA’s web site – www.bikeracing.ca

INSURANCE: WHAT YOU NEED/WANT

Everyone is welcome at our events. That said everyone must be insured through Cycling BC.

You have a couple of options with regards to insurance.

1) If you are a racer that will not make it to many events, just trying out the sport, don’t plan on racing outside of COTR series then you can come to the race and just pay $10 extra on top of the entry fee (unless racing Beginner) to make certain you are insured.

2) For everyone else and all those wishing to participate you MUST have proof of club membership and/or a Cycling BC or UCI race license.

You can do the races without paying any extra:
– If you have purchased a full UCI race license for 2012 for EITHER Road OR Road with MTB
– If you have purchased a Cycling BC citizen license for 2012

For those that do not yet have any Cycling BC affiliation or license:
– If you do not have club membership/race license please go to:
http://cyclocross.cyclingbc.net/late-season-license/ and complete the application process, pay the fee and bring a copy of the confirmation email to registration Wed night. The late season UCI licenses only required if you will be racing outside of the province
– This link is for Citizen licenses:

To be friendly to your fellow racers on and off the course….while racing HARD on the course. To be respectful of other park and venue users. CROSS ON THE ROCK NEWS #1 for 2012: Less than 7 months until COTR starts again!!

CROSS ON THE ROCK NEWS #1 for 2012

First thing first: Probably a good time to update my mailing list again. If you don’t want to get this newsletter, your mail e-mail has changed or you are getting this 3X or more….let me know and we will take appropriate action!

We actually started to work on the 2012 COTR schedule in December. It has just taken me a bit of time to try to get caught up. Rest a tiny bit. Sit on my bum a bit and now get back into action and get this information OUT! 2012 will be an AWESOME year for cross on Vancouver Island as well as in BC. We will again be hosting 7 COTR series events with various partners and clubs on the island. As well the National Championships will be held in Steveston in November. World Championships for the Elites will be held for the first time in North America and Masters world champs will be held again in Kentucky….perhaps for the last time in a LONG time…..so there are LOTS of reasons to race this year. It does not matter if your goals are the local series, provincials, nationals or worlds…..we will have the races for you to get out to!!

WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW: 2012 COTR SERIES SCHEDULE. SEASON #7

Race #1: We will be starting the season this year for the first time in Victoria returning to the Gorge Park on September 16th
Race #2: Two weeks later race #2 will be rolling up in Cumberland on the 30th. (Note: Possible New Venue/Course)
Race #3: PORT ALBERNI. We know if you really want to be a god in “PA” you will strip your bike down to one gear and plan a designated driver home (Note: Possible New Venue/Course) October 6th
Race #4: 8 days later and one turkey consumed (or Vegan equivalent) we will be racing in Nanaimo for the first time this year (or WILL it be the “first time” in Nanaimo this year…..perhaps not). Bowen Park on Thanksgiving MONDAY.
Race #5: No Geocashers this year is a PROMISE for The GREAT Pumpkin Cross at Transfer Beach. October 28th. Another promise is SAND….
Race #6: Pro City Cycling Team will be hosting this race on November 11th (MIGHT BE the 10th…stay tuned)…..Venue….well…..not 100% on that either….it is EARLY….But this WILL be an important race to get you prepped for Nationals on the next weekend.
Race #7: Finishing off the season for the first time since….what? 2009? Beban Park in Nanaimo hosted by MIVA on November 24th OR 25th….again stay tuned!!

Not 100% dialed but you get the idea and it SHOULD get you pumped up.

Other important dates that you “might” want to know.
September 22nd: Star Crossed in Seattle.
September 23rd: Rapha-Focus GP in Seattle
November 17th: Canadian National Champs in Steveston BC (Still earlier than we would like to see BUT since it is in BC….well the COTR racers will be there in FULL FORCE)
November 18th: A little UCI race the “day after” in Steveston BC
January 29th to February 1st: World Masters Championships in Louisville, Kentucky (Masters…this might be your last chance to race worlds in North America!)
February 2nd and 3rd: World Elite Championships in Louisville, Kentucky (We HOPE to see a few of our racers there….in ALL categories)
July 16th. Norm’s Birthday (just throwing it out there)

COTR CHANGES FOR 2012
You know….we are letting you know the scoop for the race season early. Giving you the chance to buy some of Kabush’s gear. Plugging the Island Cup. Getting you to buy your license…..do we really want to OVERLOAD you with more….???

All you have to know is that we are not doing any MAJOR overhauls to our series and how we run things. Things are going pretty smooth…..we will be “tweaking” a few things. Working on buying a few new pieces of equipment. Tweaking the schedule. Tweaking registration. Tweaking …..just a lot of tweaking. We have already started tweaking and will continue to do so. We will update you on a few things in our News #2 once your excitement has settled down from seeing the schedule so early.

NEED SOME COOL/FAST/LIGHT GEAR?
Sometimes COTR racer, Geoff Kabush, has a tonne of gear to sell off. Changing sponsors etc…..too much to list but some of the stuff you might be interested in:

2 pair Easton EC90 SLX 24mm with 12-27 Dura Ace Cassette and Dugast custom tubular with Maxxis Raze tread.

2 pair Easton EC90 SLX 24mm with 12-27 Dura Ace Cassette and Dugast custom tubular with Maxxis Mud Wrestler tread.

2 pair Easton EC90 SL 38mm clinchers with 12-27 Dura Ace Cassette and your choice of Maxxis Cross tire Raze or Mud Wrestler.

A brand new 26in XL Vertex hardtail (never ridden except for the wheels which are pretty mint too) (XTR, Fox, Stan’s Wheels, Easton stuff). I might just part out unless someone wanted it for $2500 or so….

I left my very nice Element full-sus at Pro City in Vic a couple weeks ago if anyone is interested in that. Last one went quickly for $3500 so wanted 3-something for it.

Also left a nice pair of Stan’s Flow wheels on DT Swiss hubs at ProCity which could be had for cheap. Front wheel is QR so I can’t use them as I have gone 15mm thru axle.

Fire Kabush a note if you are interested: Geoff Kabush gkabush@aol.com

WHAT LICENSE SHOULD I GET FOR 2012????

There is NO DOUBT it is CONFUSING. It is not easy. You can’t even print off a form any more. You have to be a member of YET ANOTHER registration page….you can’t even look at the options unless you know your 1 millionth password…..which I can’t remember EVER.

They just don’t seem to make it easy…..

BUT let me tell you right now. There is only one type of license you should get for 2012 and that is a FULL UCI Race License. This will allow you to do any race you want in the world BUT MOST important if will allow you to race COTR, Provincials and National Champs. YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT!!

That being said….if you do want to miss out and all you will be racing is Island Cup MTB series and COTR races….get the regional license…or what ever they call it now….I can’t even look it up ‘cause I can’t remember my password (again).

PLANNING SOME OPEN CROSS TRAINING SESSIONS FOR 2012?
There were a few more training sessions happening last season on the island. We would like to help spread the word if you are having any. Victoria Wednesday night sessions will start before the first event. MIVA had some good sessions last year. Trail Bikes in Courtenay as well. Ideally we would like to see these weekly in every town on the island. Keep us posted if you have any information.

CROSS ON THE ROCK NEWS #11 for 2011: Ricky Bobby Cameron Cross Shake and Baked…..the series is a wrap!

Have you seen Pelle’s new YouTube Video for Ricky Bobby Cameron Cross….worth checking out! Update: And one from Russell Berg as well.

I am still recovering from Saturday……just had some time this morning to finally wash my bike….well Peter Wellsman tried to wash my bike for me while I was preparing the prizes post race but when I went to load it into the van I noticed that while it was a sweet KONA Major Jake….it was NOT my KONA Major Jake…..so someone got a free spray off of their bike while mine remained VERY dirty for a couple more days.

Norm’s sad bike….2 days after Ricky Bobby.

COTR #7 for 2011. Ricky Bobby Cameron Cross at Western Speedway.

The last race of the series is always a blur for me. So much to do….want to make it all work out….plus have a good race (has never happened)…….and then wrap up the series and get some work done around the house that has been on hold for 2.5 months…..and spend time with Tessa who is now 2.5 months old!

Last year we did not get to have a conclusion to our series because of a big dump of snow. All last week I was a bit worried and when I woke up in Nanaimo on Saturday morning with 2 inches of snow in my yard I was worried….but Victoria being Victoria….the weather was great. Colder than our other races of the year….but this is cross and we have to expect to race in the cold once in a while…..did we even get a drop of rain during a race this year??

Paul Brend and the IRC crew had the course pretty much dialed when I arrived. After a preview lap with Paul and Roland we decided to add a bit more distance to the course. The added distance along with the thawed motocross track made the course just right for timing, distance, technical and finally….MUD!! A great mix of fast, slow….really slow….on-off bike….grass, pavement and dirt/mud!

The race turned out to be our second largest turn out in the history of COTR. It also has the statistic for now being our toughest race ever with the highest drop out rate. Mechanical failure being the #1 cause of drop out. The second being body-failure.

Unfortunately we also had our biggest accident in the years of racing. Despite their only being 9 racers in the women’s open field they are all fierce competitors and not wanting to back down at all in the opening 100 meters…..their spirit caused 3 of them to come together and then go down on the track. Tanya Berg and Amanda Wakeling taking the harshest of the blows while Karen Fedoruk was out….but did not require the ambulance. I contacted both Tanya and Amanda and neither of them can tell me what happened….only that they were going full speed. Both girls are going to enjoy a bit of time off the bike while they recover and were very bummed that they did not get to finish the race or the series. All three looking forward to next year already.

The other categories also had some hot racing action. The double points and series final always gets people fired up!

I personally liked Russell Anderson’s (one of the many people I love racing against) e-mail response to my “how did your race go”?;

Slow start, not sure if I was paranoid or just slow. Spent some time in no mans land before finally catching up to you guys. After that you were my motivation, the moto track was cool to check the status of your competition. After that I just kept her steady and watched the leaders come unglued with Mechanicals. Watched Tom destroy his bike twice, Kelly threw his bike into the bushes, Cameron rolled his tubular the list goes on, (Steve) Bachop? All in all a great race!

Wondering what happened to Steve Bachop I fired him a note as well:

From Steve: was going OK the first 3-4 laps then just kinda fell off, not a lot of zip in the old legs today. I also flatted around lap 5 after the pits and slid around the motocross section before changing my wheel, so lost a bunch of places there. It was a fun course though.

The course because of the mud required a very delicate approach to shifting and longevity and those that jam-gears were met with snapped DR hangers!

We also had a great time with the first ever COTR SHOP CHALLENGE with around 13 entries….one lap…..all the glory….plus a case of Saltspring Coffee. Dan Scott from Oak Bay Bikes Westshore won it for the boys taking control half way through the lap. Jenny Skinner dominated it for the girls and Oak Bay Bikes in Oak Bay!

A great race and a great way to finish the series.

Thanks to everyone for the season and we will see you next September.

COTR 2011 PHOTO CONTEST

We (by “We” I mean Roland has) have made a separate gallery for the 7 finalist photos from our photo contest.

The winner in case you missed it was Halldor Gunnarsson’s Photo:

This photo received the most number of votes from our 11 Judge panel.

Photos were judged based on:
Judge on:
1) Quality of photo
2) Composition
3) Framing
4) IF the photo captures “Cross”
5) If the photo captures COTR?

One of the best Cross Photographers out there, Joe Sales, was one of our judges and he had this to say about Halldor’s photo:

A Euro-maxed out dude shoulder to shoulder with a guy rocking disc brakes and a BC bike race jersey with fans cheering. Older dude even has a bloody mini-bike light on his handlebars. And its a perfect mild pan, just enough to capture motion and spoke blur but the riders are sharp. The colours aren’t dialed in but content is king. This picture wins for sure. There’s even a baseball diamond in the background! This picture shows that there is something for everyone at COTR: Euro – geekiness, Fred-Geekiness and crazed rabid spectators. And after the race you can play softball.

STILL LOOKING TO DO SOME MORE RACING??

In the USA the cross season goes until January (and actually started in July this year). In Europe it goes to February…..in BC we still have a couple more weekends and you can squeak in a couple more with a bit of travel.

This coming weekend on November 27th: PROVINCIAL CHAMPS in North Vancouver. http://www.atomicracing.com/race/ COTR series leaders will get favorable call ups with their call up proto call which will be: Front row: Provincial / island champ and top 3 from BC cup/island series. Second row: Positions 4-6 from BC cup / island series. Third row and beyond will be random. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER IN ORDER TO GET THIS CONSIDERATION!!

The weekend after that is the BC Cup FINALS on December 3rd. http://daryl-evansracing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=16&Itemid=31 This race will be in South Surrey so only a short hop on the ferry as well.

Cascade Cross in Bellingham http://cascadecross.com/races Actually has 2 more races coming up. December 17th they have Thriller Cross and then in JANUARY on the 14th they have Chiller Cross. I did one of their events two years ago and they were similar in feel to COTR.

If you are looking for some MAJOR COMPETITION then join a few of the other COTR racers heading to Bend Oregon for the last weekend of USGP http://www.usgpcyclocross.com/index.php racing on December 10th and 11th.

After that you will have a chance at Sea Otter to do some cross for the first time…..and then will have to wait until September and the next season of COTR!
