Remember this is YOUR series.  I have had some e-mails of thanks and suggestions for next year…..PLEASE send if you have ideas and thoughts.  Sometimes there are reasons why we do things the way we do….but some things can be changed.  I did mention the new points structure for next year and separate series scoring for 50+.  We have other ideas as well but send your notes!!

Masters Results

You may have figured out that the master’s results from Sunday were in the correct order BUT the wrong times.  Sean Crookshank was closer to 52 minutes than 36.  What happened was our trusty Timex stop watch that was timing the Master’s race died part way through it.  CPR was administered BUT no luck.  So the placings were all correct BUT the times were basically made up to satisfy the spreadsheet and keep you all in place.  Bummer….but these things happen from time to time….low tech or high tech….there are always glitches!

It has been a great season of racing….the numbers and stories tell the tale.  We are looking forward to next year and starting planning already.  It is great to be part of COTR and have such a passionate bunch of people racing, helping and sponsoring.  We could not do it without you!

A VERY Special Thanks to:

Hilary and Steve Grant.  We received Hilary as a volunteer a couple of years ago at Cumberland….and we are not giving her up!  The reason why our low tech timing system works is primary because of Hilary’s coolness under pressure.  Her husband Steve is also invaluable allowing Hilary to help while he is the pit crew to the boys!!  Plus he helps with the timing sometimes too.

CYCLING BC AND THE AGM THIS WEEKEND

Many in the cycling community believe that Cycling BC is not fulfilling their mandate to “foster quality competition from the grass-roots through to high performance levels, and encourage partnerships to grow participation in the sport of cycling”.  Further there is widely shared opinion that the culture within the organization must change before there is any possibility that its mandate can be fulfilled. Cycling BC has a responsibility to uphold its relationship with its membership, stakeholders and the public. In order to maintain and strengthen these relationships the organization must improve its communication and transparency with each of these groups.

A group of like-minded individuals, with a passion to see cycling grow and succeed in this province, has been organised to help return Cycling BC to its mission statement, and become an organization that prides itself on building the sport from the grassroots, fostering growth, supporting clubs, and being an active leader at all levels.

The group, the Future of Cycling in British Columbia, firmly believes that Cycling BC must become an organization that champions development at all levels, for all disciplines, and fosters lifelong participation in the sport. To this end, the Group has assembled a slate of like-minded candidates for four open board of director positions that will be elected at the upcoming Cycling BC annual general meeting. The candidates, with the support of the Group, are putting together a plan focused on four specific areas: Development, Participation, Clubs, and Communications.

Change within Cycling BC will only occur under the governance of a like-minded Board of Directors committed to that change. Four board positions are up for re-election at the AGM on Sunday December 2nd, a slate of candidates who are all committed to the goal of initiating positive change at Cycling BC. MASTERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in January (and then stick around and watch how the Elite do it)

Louisville, KY – October 30, 2012. Online registration for the 2013 UCI Masters Cyclo-cross World Championships powered by Exergy, scheduled for January 29th – February 1st, 2013 in Louisville, KY, will open on November 1st on USACycling.org.

Participants can register for the following age groups: M / W 30-34; M / W 35-39; M / W 40-44; M / W 45-49; M / W 50-54; M /W 55-59; M / W 60-64; Women 65+; Men 65-69; Men 70-74 and Men 75+; see below for schedule.  Registration opens with early pricing at $75 per rider through January 4th, 2013. On January 5th, 2013 the entry fee moves to $100 per rider and closes on January 25th. On-site registration will be available for $125.

Raced on the new Masters World Championship venue at at Champions Park in Louisville, the course will features elevation and speed changes, dirt, sand, grass, off-camber technical sections and enough natural terrain change to challenge riders.

The Galt House is the Official Host Hotel of the 2013 Masters and 2013 Elite World Championships, and is located at 140 N. 4th Street, Louisville, KY. Visit www.louisville2013.com to make reservations.

A few last minute details for tomorrow’s event (and a couple of other tid-bits)

• Parking: There is a HUGE amount of parking at Beban Park. Park where you like as long as you DO NOT PARK anywhere south of the Soccer fields. We need to keep that parking for Soccer AND keep the entrance to the BIG BARN clear of bike rider traffic.
• Horses!! The big barn is begin used by an Equestrian group so PLEASE stay CLEAR of that area. Do not ride, warm up, drive near, practice your sprints, streak or do war cries in that area. Be a good neighbor.

I forgot to mention how much money COTR and the BC Cross community raised for prize money last weekend. In the end it was around $2500. I say “around” because even at the last second we were getting envelopes of cash handed to us….which was great….but became hard to account for….tough problem!! Again it was very well received by the riders.

A few RANDOM things before we get into the rest of this Newsletter.

• We seem to be getting a lot more e-mails saying things like “Best course ever”. “Best Event Ever”. Etc. after each race which is really positive enforcement for what we have been doing this year. Thanks to everyone that takes the time to e-mail us good stuff or constructive suggestions.
• I wanted to make a personal comment about the Binab GP course that I thought the section of course from the bottom of the stairs to the top of the motorcross track…..that 200M was probably the toughest section of course I have ever raced. TOUGH!! And I loved it!
• We forgot to get the name of the man who won the shop challenge at the Binab GP……it was Mitchell Thacker, Scott Mitchell, and Fluffy Aaron 1 2 3

SERIES LEADERS…..

With 6 out of a possible 7 scores counting toward the total for the series and DOUBLE Points…..the standings have a way of getting all mixed up at the last race. Add in out of towners, one race per season racers, mechanicals, sand pits and dragons and anything can and will happen on Saturday. All you can do is race your best race…..and CHECK YOUR POINTS BEFORE HAND! If there are any problems with your points for the series….let Roland know ASAP. roland@rabien.com

Where’s the Money at?

As most of you know the COTR series was part of a bigger group that donated to equalizing and boosting prize money over the National Championship weekend. This proved to be a bit more of a challenge than we originally thought it would be. It actually BLEW UP on Thursday and Friday last week over the regular and social media. Finally Cycling BC announced late Friday that they would equalize the prize money for the UCI C2 race on Sunday which was a WIN. So Dave and I spread out the envelopes, cash and letters and sorted out all the prize money for Saturday’s National Champs. We had enough to boost the Elite Category for men and women as well as give away some money for the top 3 in JR and U23 men (still no category for this for women….work in progress). On the way to giving out the money I actually had someone else from Sunday Best racing hand me cash so we boosted it a bit more and saved $50 for our top JR Female (unofficial category) and COTR Racer Taryn Cote. We have had a few e-mails and personal responses back from the racers thanking us for taking up the initiative which was really cool. “Awesome race yesterday….(XXXXXXX) and I were commenting on how awesome it is that everyone sticks around in the cold, rainy, crappy weather (with their kids!) to socialize and be there for the podium. Some of the Highlights from a lot of Highlights:

• Carey Mark winning the Trek Bike from Pro City-Trek Bikes. It was great to see someone SUPER PUMPED to win!! Carey mounted the podium with the bike and apparently called EVERYONE on her drive home from Victoria!!
• I have always dreamed about a “Braveheart” start. We came close at NISSCOTU but the lack of grid having 40+ riders straight across for the holeshot…..it took everything to 11. We really should have had a holeshot award and is something that we will do next time as that venue is perfect for it.
• Adam De Vos gets another mention. Scaled it back on Lap One….ended up his highest placing EVER for COTR in Expert with a 5th. Good luck at Nationals Adam!
• Rob Parkin also gets a mention for his highest placing ever in Expert by quite a bit. He had another great start but was actually able to hold it……unlike me.
• I saw the shot of Tom Skinner after the race with his Wafels….and we wonder who ate the most Wafels on Sunday? My personal count was 4.
• History was made on Sunday with Wendy Simms inventing the “moustache handup” at this event. Andy Pitre taking the first moustache hand up in HISTORY!! Look for more of the same at COTR#7!
• The Flyover!
• I read that some time COTR racer Jamie Sparling had retired from bike racing….so I was pretty pumped to see that “retired” did not mean “no longer races cross” and he was out at the race on Sunday.
• My face was still dirty at 8:30 at night on Sunday….not a “highlight”.
• A certain “pro-masters” racer coming out of retirement specifically to race Ian Smith who was a no-show. It was like Rocky coming off the couch to jump in the ring with Mr T….but then Mr T did not show up…..disappointment for all!

SERIES LEADERS…..

Katie and Roland are computer master minds….but even masterminds sometimes make mistakes. When they put the calculation/spreadsheet for series leaders yesterday they used last year’s program which was best 5 of 6….so yesterday it dropped your lowest result which of course is not supposed to happen until after the last race.

SO a few people got the leaders arm bands that were not supposed to……check out the results…..get the arm band to the person that is supposed to have it at the last race…..then race like hell and try to win it for yourself!

Sorry to: Tom Skinner who now leads the Expert Men. Parker Bloom who is still leading intermediate (and did 3 races yesterday!!). Peter Wellsman who is leading the 50+. All the others were correct (I am pretty sure).

We collected a bit more $$ yesterday….the person to person approach seemed to work best! I will tally that up and let everyone know exactly where that $ went in the next news. Thanks everyone that contributed!

Wanna go to the MASTERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in January (and then stick around and watch how the Elite do it)

Louisville, KY – October 30, 2012. Online registration for the 2013 UCI Masters Cyclo-cross World Championships powered by Exergy, scheduled for January 29th – February 1st, 2013 in Louisville, KY, will open on November 1st on USACycling.org.

Participants can register for the following age groups: M / W 30-34; M / W 35-39; M / W 40-44; M / W 45-49; M / W 50-54; M /W 55-59; M / W 60-64; Women 65+; Men 65-69; Men 70-74 and Men 75+; see below for schedule. Registration opens with early pricing at $75 per rider through January 4th, 2013. On January 5th, 2013 the entry fee moves to $100 per rider and closes on January 25th. On-site registration will be available for $125.

Raced on the new Masters World Championship venue at at Champions Park in Louisville, the course will features elevation and speed changes, dirt, sand, grass, off-camber technical sections and enough natural terrain change to challenge riders.

The Galt House is the Official Host Hotel of the 2013 Masters and 2013 Elite World Championships, and is located at 140 N. 4th Street, Louisville, KY. Visit www.louisville2013.com to make reservations.

Cross on the Rock is now the un-official biggest cross race series in Canada. If you can find stats to support otherwise….please let us know…until then we are the un-official biggest!!

Rock Star registration closes at 6:00Pm tonight.  If you pre-reg you will be able to bypass the line, show your license….and be done in a minute.
