Nice little article in the Nanaimo Daily News: http://www2.canada.com/nanaimodailynews/news/sports/story.html?id=478aafe2-d9cd-4fdc-961c-e840b5e8a536

Some of my Highlights

  • Nanaimo Bar Hand Ups
  • Pyrotechnics
  • Hecklers
  • Hecklers at the stairs
  • The Number of Megaphones there were on course.
  • That the BMX track did not claim and victims BUT getting off the BMX track certainly did
  • The kids race course was reported to be the best one yet….even a bridge!
  • Colin Wilson’s BIG BOX of fresh Cumberland doughnut holes.
  • Gabriel Gledhill’s Birthday surprise.
  • James Grant taking his 5th Beginner win….at 14.  His first beginner career win came in his first race at 12 years old.
  • A burly ‘stache for the movember contest won by Ken Olson

Masters Results

You may have figured out that the master’s results from Sunday were in the correct order BUT the wrong times.  Sean Crookshank was closer to 52 minutes than 36.  What happened was our trusty Timex stop watch that was timing the Master’s race died part way through it.  CPR was administered BUT no luck.  So the placings were all correct BUT the times were basically made up to satisfy the spreadsheet and keep you all in place.  Bummer….but these things happen from time to time….low tech or high tech….there are always glitches!

Lost and Found

I seemed to have ended up with a few more new items from last weekend……I would LOVE to get rid of them….if they are yours please let me know how to get them to you.

  • OBB Jacket….very worn….probably Russell Andersons or Dawns
  • Black DeeFeet Arm Warmers
  • Black well worn Knee warmers
  • Light Blue KONA gloves
  • MEC Size Medium Men’s warm up pants.  Black
  • Size LG Sugoi Hydrolite Jacket
  • Size MD Sugoi Hydrolite Jacket
  • Axiom Rain Jacket with “Annie” written in the back of it.

COTR SEASON #7 WRAP UP

Top Rookie:                        Parker Bloom
Top JR Male:                      Jordan Duncan
Top JR Female:                  Tarryn Cote
Most Improved:                  Janna Gillick

It has been a great season of racing….the numbers and stories tell the tale.  We are looking forward to next year and starting planning already.  It is great to be part of COTR and have such a passionate bunch of people racing, helping and sponsoring.  We could not do it without you!

A VERY Special Thanks to:

Hilary and Steve Grant.  We received Hilary as a volunteer a couple of years ago at Cumberland….and we are not giving her up!  The reason why our low tech timing system works is primary because of Hilary’s coolness under pressure.  Her husband Steve is also invaluable allowing Hilary to help while he is the pit crew to the boys!!  Plus he helps with the timing sometimes too.

Jamie Cameron and Glenowyn Carlson help with data input at registration allowing Roland and Katie to race…..key people

Roland and Katie Rabien stepped up when I retired from putting on races 3 years ago……can I retire now??

Vegan Dave for doing all the reports to the press.  They don’t seem to like the ones I do…..so he does stuff they do like.

Our race directors: Curtis Saunders, Roland Rabien, Peter McCaffery, Lee Blais, Mike and Tara Pollock, Corey and Sean from OBB-Nanaimo and Drew MacKenzie.

And Thanks to Our Series Sponsors

Cycles Lambert (Leyzne).  Peter Creighton has been a LONG time supporter of this series….from WAY-WAY back.  We tap out his promotion budget and then some and he always does as much as he possibly can for us and our prizing.

Zed Wheels.  Brad Head builds sweet wheels and comes out and races too.  He gave us two sets of wheels for our finals this year as well as other swag throughout the season.

Action Motorcycles.  Jamie Emery is another sponsor/racer who has supported the series with great prizing as well as helping us out when ever he can.

Frontrunners Nanaimo….well without their support their would be no series.  We even got the Frontrunners Westshore guys out this year racing!

Hammer Nutrition.  New sponsor this year providing product and prizing….we hope to have them back on board again next year.

KONA.  One of the highlights of the season was having long time supporter Dik Cox come out and do his first EVER cross race at the Kona Kup!

Howard Johnson.  Dan Brady….we ALMOST got him to race……ALMOST.  Thanks to the Howard Johnson for their prizes and room rate deals.

Nutcase.  Sponsor of the ‘Lil nutty kids races with prizes and support.  Thanks Elladee and Joele

Oak Bay Bikes.  A few of our sponsors are through the support of OBB.  Plus Corey and Sean are the RD’s for the Kona Kup.  OBB-Westshore sponsor Pelle’s edits with $$…which is KEY.

Parkside Victoria.  Jim Pearson did not make it out to a race this year….but he has supported our events and cycling on Vancouver Island for a LONG-LONG time.  Thanks for the prizes Jim!

Phillips BEER……sponsor of our Barriers this year….and the first lap prime….and the first Single Speeder……we always welcome their support and drink their beer!

Saltspring Coffee.  Bryn has moved jobs from Saltspring Coffee but while he was there and even when he knew he was going…..he worked hard to make sure we were covered.  Thanks Bryn!!  We don’t know who is taking over for Bryn or if Saltspring will be involved next year…..but we thank them for their support over the years.

Orange Sport Supply.  Greg Inkster actually supported our races BEFORE we were the COTR series…WAY back in 2004!!  It took us a few years and a LOT of e-mails to get him back on board but we hope to have him as a long time partner for years to come.

CYCLING BC AND THE AGM THIS WEEKEND

There is a group called “the future of cycling in BC”.  Check it out if you can and if you like it and if you haven’t already signed the petition of support for this group you can do so here:

Here it is    http://thefutureofcyclinginbc.weebly.com/

Here is their mandate:

Many in the cycling community believe that Cycling BC is not fulfilling their mandate to “foster quality competition from the grass-roots through to high performance levels, and encourage partnerships to grow participation in the sport of cycling”.  Further there is widely shared opinion that the culture within the organization must change before there is any possibility that its mandate can be fulfilled. Cycling BC has a responsibility to uphold its relationship with its membership, stakeholders and the public. In order to maintain and strengthen these relationships the organization must improve its communication and transparency with each of these groups.

A group of like-minded individuals, with a passion to see cycling grow and succeed in this province, has been organised to help return Cycling BC to its mission statement, and become an organization that prides itself on building the sport from the grassroots, fostering growth, supporting clubs, and being an active leader at all levels.

The group, the Future of Cycling in British Columbia, firmly believes that Cycling BC must become an organization that champions development at all levels, for all disciplines, and fosters lifelong participation in the sport. To this end, the Group has assembled a slate of like-minded candidates for four open board of director positions that will be elected at the upcoming Cycling BC annual general meeting. The candidates, with the support of the Group, are putting together a plan focused on four specific areas: Development, Participation, Clubs, and Communications.

Change within Cycling BC will only occur under the governance of a like-minded Board of Directors committed to that change. Four board positions are up for re-election at the AGM on Sunday December 2nd, a slate of candidates who are all committed to the goal of initiating positive change at Cycling BC. We are asking for your support by attending the AGM and voting for ALL of the following individuals for their respective positions.

VP FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT Tony Martin

VP CYCLO CROSS Matt Klymson
VP ROAD/TRACK Tim Abercrombie
VP BMX Jeff Clarke

COTR #7 Series Championships. Day before details + information.

A few last minute details for tomorrow’s event (and a couple of other tid-bits)

  • Parking: There is a HUGE amount of parking at Beban Park. Park where you like as long as you DO NOT PARK anywhere south of the Soccer fields. We need to keep that parking for Soccer AND keep the entrance to the BIG BARN clear of bike rider traffic.
  • Horses!! The big barn is begin used by an Equestrian group so PLEASE stay CLEAR of that area. Do not ride, warm up, drive near, practice your sprints, streak or do war cries in that area. Be a good neighbor.

I forgot to mention how much money COTR and the BC Cross community raised for prize money last weekend. In the end it was around $2500. I say “around” because even at the last second we were getting envelopes of cash handed to us….which was great….but became hard to account for….tough problem!! Again it was very well received by the riders.

Patrick Burnham had an updated gallery from the last couple of races found here to pump you up for the weekend:

A few RANDOM things before we get into the rest of this Newsletter.

  • I wanted to make a personal comment about the Binab GP course that I thought the section of course from the bottom of the stairs to the top of the motorcross track…..that 200M was probably the toughest section of course I have ever raced. TOUGH!! And I loved it!
  • We forgot to get the name of the man who won the shop challenge at the Binab GP……it was Mitchell Thacker, Scott Mitchell, and Fluffy Aaron 1 2 3
  • There is also one more SWEET video from COTR #6 in case you have not seen it: http://vimeo.com/mediaone/review/53641925/59e5b67016

Where’s the Money at?

As most of you know the COTR series was part of a bigger group that donated to equalizing and boosting prize money over the National Championship weekend. This proved to be a bit more of a challenge than we originally thought it would be. It actually BLEW UP on Thursday and Friday last week over the regular and social media. Finally Cycling BC announced late Friday that they would equalize the prize money for the UCI C2 race on Sunday which was a WIN. So Dave and I spread out the envelopes, cash and letters and sorted out all the prize money for Saturday’s National Champs. We had enough to boost the Elite Category for men and women as well as give away some money for the top 3 in JR and U23 men (still no category for this for women….work in progress). On the way to giving out the money I actually had someone else from Sunday Best racing hand me cash so we boosted it a bit more and saved $50 for our top JR Female (unofficial category) and COTR Racer Taryn Cote. We have had a few e-mails and personal responses back from the racers thanking us for taking up the initiative which was really cool. Thanks to everyone that donated a few bucks and the following people and groups that gave a bit more: Bill Riley Law, Glotman Simpson Club, Sunday Best racing, Atomic Cycling Club, West Coast Racing, Interior Cross Series, Dwyane Kress, Trail Bikes-Eatmore Sprouts, Tara and Mike Pollock, Cross on the Rock #5 Crosstoberfest, Cross on the Rock #6 Binab Property GP, Pumpkin Cross, Pro City Cycles Club, OrganicAthlete Victoria cyclocrossers, Jak New
and the Escape Velocity/Garneau Evolution crew

COTR #6: Binab Property Group GP (aka BPGGP) at Western Speedway was…..was……what is another word for “Epic” that does not get used as much….what ever that word is what that event was!!

“Awesome race yesterday….(XXXXXXX) and I were commenting on how awesome it is that everyone sticks around in the cold, rainy, crappy weather (with their kids!) to socialize and be there for the podium. In all the off-island racing we’ve done this year we haven’t seen a bigger crowd of people than there were yesterday – even at (XXXXXX-RACE)….pretty awesome!”

A LOT of Video floating around from COTR#6

COTR#6 The Binab Property Group GP at Western Speedway. Recap

From the Fun Director Roland Rabien:

A huge thank you to all the volunteers that helped make the race such a success. It’s a huge amount of work to do course setup, registration, timing, results, tear down all in one day. Days of work also went into the flyover, run-up, collecting prizes and organization. There is no way to do it without an army of volunteers including:

Adam de Vos, Alex Hui, Andrea Robson, Andrew Barnes, Andy Achuff, Bryn Shapperd, Danielle Stevens, Drew MacKenzie, Dylan Reeves, Ed Thacker, Geordie Morrison, Glenowyn Carlson, Jamie Cameron, Jamie Richardsen, Jason Binab, Jeff Doyle, Jim Pauly, Joel Taylor, Joele Gynup, John Rogers, Justin Binab, Katie Duncan, Kevin Ford, Mark Planiden, Mitch Thacker, Nathaniel Cook, Normon Thibault, Peter Wellsman, Rasmus Rabien, Richard Cook, Rob Parkin, Ryan Clarke, Scott Mitchell, Shanna Wild, Steve Lund, Tanya Berg, Tom Malczynski, Troy Woodburn, Wendy Simms

And thanks and apologies to those I missed.

And thank you to out sponsors. Please support the businesses that support our series:

Binab Property Group, EBOOST, Trek Bikes Victoria, Razu Welding, Hugo Donais of Sun Life Financial, Popeye’s Supplements, Rumble, Wannawafel, Victoria Grizzlies, Prime Steak House, Cactus Club, Luv Hair Salon, Victory Barber and Brand, Modern Beauty Supplies, Water’s Edge Resort in Ucluelet, L’Hermitage Hotel, National Car Rental, Slegg Lumber, Frontrunners.

And thank you to everybody who came out and raced.

Bikeshop Challenge: Repeat Winner: Jenny Skinner. New Male Champion with all the bragging rights was: Mitch Thacker.

From NORM.

Some of the Highlights from a lot of Highlights:

  • Carey Mark winning the Trek Bike from Pro City-Trek Bikes. It was great to see someone SUPER PUMPED to win!! Carey mounted the podium with the bike and apparently called EVERYONE on her drive home from Victoria!!
  • I have always dreamed about a “Braveheart” start. We came close at NISSCOTU but the lack of grid having 40+ riders straight across for the holeshot…..it took everything to 11. We really should have had a holeshot award and is something that we will do next time as that venue is perfect for it.
  • Adam De Vos gets another mention. Scaled it back on Lap One….ended up his highest placing EVER for COTR in Expert with a 5th. Good luck at Nationals Adam!
  • Rob Parkin also gets a mention for his highest placing ever in Expert by quite a bit. He had another great start but was actually able to hold it……unlike me.
  • I saw the shot of Tom Skinner after the race with his Wafels….and we wonder who ate the most Wafels on Sunday? My personal count was 4.
  • History was made on Sunday with Wendy Simms inventing the “moustache handup” at this event. Andy Pitre taking the first moustache hand up in HISTORY!! Look for more of the same at COTR#7!
  • The Flyover!
  • I read that some time COTR racer Jamie Sparling had retired from bike racing….so I was pretty pumped to see that “retired” did not mean “no longer races cross” and he was out at the race on Sunday.
  • My face was still dirty at 8:30 at night on Sunday….not a “highlight”.
  • A certain “pro-masters” racer coming out of retirement specifically to race Ian Smith who was a no-show. It was like Rocky coming off the couch to jump in the ring with Mr T….but then Mr T did not show up…..disappointment for all!

SERIES LEADERS…..

Katie and Roland are computer master minds….but even masterminds sometimes make mistakes. When they put the calculation/spreadsheet for series leaders yesterday they used last year’s program which was best 5 of 6….so yesterday it dropped your lowest result which of course is not supposed to happen until after the last race.

SO a few people got the leaders arm bands that were not supposed to……check out the results…..get the arm band to the person that is supposed to have it at the last race…..then race like hell and try to win it for yourself!

Sorry to: Tom Skinner who now leads the Expert Men. Parker Bloom who is still leading intermediate (and did 3 races yesterday!!). Peter Wellsman who is leading the 50+. All the others were correct (I am pretty sure).

$$

We collected a bit more $$ yesterday….the person to person approach seemed to work best! I will tally that up and let everyone know exactly where that $ went in the next news. Thanks everyone that contributed!
